Eye Exams
Your eyesight is priceless. An annual eye exam will help to maintain clear and comfortable vision and detect eye disease early. Children should have their eyes examined by age 3 and can be examined as young as 6 months old. Currently, OHIP covers one full eye exam every year for patients 19 and under or 65 and older. For those 20 to 64, certain medical conditions may also be covered by OHIP. Most private health care insurance plans will cover the cost of an eye exam but individual plans vary on the frequency and the amount covered; patients are encouraged to check this information prior to their appointments.
To examine the retina more thoroughly, we combine the use of our instruments with Optomap retinal imaging. Each method provides the Doctor a very different view of the retina so when used together, it allows for a more thorough retinal exam. This allows us to diagnose both ocular and systemic diseases much easier. Often, people who have 20/20 vision and no visual symptoms can have retinal conditions! The Optomap is recommended to our patients of all ages since it is non-invasive and provides us with a permanent image of the retina to store in the clinical file to allow easy comparisons between visits.
